Wolverine #311 presents the second chapter of Sabretooth Reborn, the sequel to Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi's Evolutionstoryline. Those curious as to the exact nature of Sabretooth's recent return will have their queries answered in this issue. As promised, Loeb builds on a lingering clue from the previous story, and makes it clear as to exactly what that clue is in the script. As far as comic book resurrections go, the explanation is about as simple and formulaic as they come.
With that revelation on hand, the real question is whether there's any reason to keep reading this arc. The answer may be yes if you're a fan of Simone Bianchi's art style. Once again, Bianchi improves in his shift towards more simple and geometric page layouts. There's a sense of storytelling flow here that was too often lacking in his previous X-Men works. Unfortunately, his facial work is till wonky in some cases, and this issue suffers from having four separate colorists and the resulting uneven visual tone.
The script itself doesn't justify the price of admission. This issue heavily focuses on fight scenes between Wolverine, Sabretooth, and the mysterious redhead who appeared at the end of #310. The steady stream of generic and often downright goofy action movie one-liners makes it difficult to take the action seriously or find any emotional investment in the tale. The new female character shows potential, at least, though her climactic revelation is disappointingly predictable. Ultimately, however, this issue is simply sparse and barren. Despite the fact that Sabretooth Reborn is a mere four issues long, the plot still feels stretched thin. The story of Sabretooth's return isn't half as interesting as what shenanigans the villain is currently getting into in the other X-books.
