Square Enix has unveiled a new teaser site for the Lightning Saga ahead of its September 1 announcement.
The site claims that "A Storm Gathers" and reveals that the producer, director and art director of the Final Fantasy XIII series will reveal a new direction for Lightning next month.
Rumours have been building that Square Enix is preparing to announce Final Fantasy XIII-3 for some time. They first started thanks to Final Fantasy XIII-2 ending with the words "to be continued"; then, last month, FFXIII and XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama stated that the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2's DLC hinted the story wasn't over, before teasing that "the day when the meaning of this will come to light is not too far off."
The appearance of the teaser site today confirms much of what we already knew; that Square Enix will share more details about its next Final Fantasy XIII project on September 1 at the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event in Shibuya. As the site reveals that Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 have shipped a cumulative total of 9.6 million units, the idea that Square may want to continue its lucrative but divisive series isn't particularly far-fetched.
Whatever the reveal is, producer Yoshinori Kitase previously shared that the new project only recently entered production. We'll be sure to fill you in on Square Enix's big reveal on September 1.
Luke Karmali is IGN's UK Editorial Assistant, and thinks Final Fantasy X is the best game in the franchise. You too can revel in mediocrity by following him on IGN and on Twitter.
