App Store Update: August 1

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 – ($4.99)

Comic book icon Judge Dredd is making his way back onto the silver screen with a new film soon, and in advance of that movie's debut it seems we're getting another iOS adventure for everyone's favorite police officer from the future. (Last year we got Judge Dredd vs. Zombies, which is worth another look as well.) This new game, Countdown Sector 106, is actually a "gamebook," or basically an interactive novel. Think "Choose Your Own Adventure," add some dice rolls here and there and wrap it all in a slick iPad presentation.

Trainz Driver – ($2.99)

A version of this new iPhone release has been available exclusively on iPad for some time under the name "Trainz Simulator," and though the name's changed, it's the same Trainz.

Plight of the Zombie – ($2.99)

Finally, a game that considers a zombiepocalypse from the poor zombies' point of view! They're just hungry, you see, and it's up to you to help them feed in this cartoony turning of the tables on the traditional undead slaughterfests seen everywhere else in recent years.

Justice League: Earth's Final Defense – ($2.99)

Remember the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games from a few years back? DC looks to have its own version now, as Justice League: Earth's Final Defense adopts a similar overhead view of 3D brawling action and lets you jump into the roles of heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash.

Café International – ($2.99)

This one's a new conversion of a vintage board game. Café International first shipped in physical form back in 1989 and challenged players to arrange the seating chart of a restaurant filled with customers from around the globe. You have to take care not to place your guests next to those other guests from countries that would offend them, otherwise you might accidentally spark an international incident over dinner.

Retro Athletics – ($0.99)

The global flavor of Café International seems appropriate right now since the Olympics are taking place, but even more appropriate is Retro Athletics – this design offers new arcade-simple adaptations of the same sporting events being broadcast from London as we speak.

Price Drops

Pix'n Love Rush DX – ($0.99)

We fell in love with the retro flair of Pix'n Love Rush when it first arrived for iPhones two years ago, scoring it an 8.9 and granting it an Editor's Choice Award in its review. The iPad edition has just had a price drop down to the 99 cent level, the first time it's been available this cheap in nearly a year. Check it out!

Dead Trigger – (Free)

One of the best-looking games available on iOS platforms is available now for free. So what are you waiting for? Go blast some beautifully-rendered zombies to pieces.

Splash !!! – (Free)

Fans of Disney's popular Where's My Water? should take a break from showering alligators to help a cute panda bear track down his lost rubber duckies in this equally cute, equally bath-themed and totally free download.

ElectroTrains – (Free)

Also free right now is Robin Edwards' ElectroTrains, which looks like what playing with a train set must be like for young programs growing up inside the grid of Tron.

Toon Shooters – (Free)

Another free option? Toon Shooters, a forced-scrolling shooter packed with pop culture references. (Star Wars, Aliens, and more.)

Tiki Totems 2 – (Free)

And just to round things out for you, a fifth freebie for the day. Tiki Totems 2 is a puzzler that has you burning away blocks to protect a threatened tribal village.

Updates

Train Conductor 2: USA – ($0.99)

We'll close things out today by pointing out the latest update for Train Conductor 2, Version 3.0.0., which adds a new Chicago level to the game of directing train traffic. Crazily, Chicago demands that you deal with six tracks simultaneously – more than any level before. Are you up to the challenge?

And that's all for today! If you haven't already, remember to subscribe to the App Store Update via email for extra convenience:
