Rumor: Next iPhone Event on September 12

The arrival of a new iPhone is always the subject of countless rumors and speculation in the months leading up to its debut, and this year's model is no exception.

Often erroneously referred to as the "iPhone 5," but more likely to arrive as simply "the new iPhone," we've seen plenty of parts leaked, renders mocked up and over the weekend, even a fully-assembled handset that looks fairly authentic.

So when can we buy one?

Although initial speculation pointed to another October launch like last year's iPhone 4S, a report from iMore.com on Monday morning threw cold water on that notion - and even pinned Wednesday, September 12, 2012 for a media event to unveil Apple's latest handset.

That date has been quickly confirmed twice more on Monday, first by AllThingsD (who backs up their sources with a big spike in Apple's inventory component purchasing) and again by The Loop's Jim Dalrymple, an Apple insider who simply posted the initial iMore.com report with a one-word "Yep" to confirm his own sources on the matter.

Assuming the September 12 date pans out - and keep in mind that Apple is a constantly moving target and things could change at the last moment - iPhone fans can expect to get their hands on the device the following Friday, September 21.

That said, we'd still wait for an official Apple announcement before getting in line at your local Apple store...
